Sage Bambino Plus review: is the automatic milk wand worth it?

Compact espresso, easier milk
The Bambino Plus is a strong shortlist choice if you want to learn to grind, dose and tamp your own coffee, but would welcome help with milk texture. Its automatic steam wand is the main reason to choose it over the standard Bambino. It is not a bean-to-cup machine: budget for a separate espresso-capable grinder.
This is an editorial assessment of the manufacturer’s specifications and the everyday workflow, not a hands-on performance test. We have not measured extraction, milk texture, reliability or noise. Prices are reference list prices and can change by colour, retailer and region.
Quick verdict
The Bambino Plus is worth considering if you make milk drinks often and want a portafilter routine without having to master steaming on day one. You still prepare the coffee and need a suitable grinder. The premium chiefly buys automatic milk texture controls; it does not turn the machine into a bean-to-cup model.
We have not compared shots, measured foam texture or assessed long-term reliability in person. This is a buying assessment from manufacturer specifications and workflow. The standard Bambino may be better value for someone who mostly drinks straight espresso or enjoys practising manual milk.
What stands out
Both Bambino models put a compact espresso machine on the counter, with volumetric one- and two-cup controls and a fast heating system. The Plus adds hands-free milk texturing while retaining manual control. That makes it appealing to someone making several flat whites or cappuccinos each week, especially if they want to build espresso skills gradually.

How automatic milk changes the choice
For milk drinks, the Plus lets you select temperature and texture settings and place the jug under its automatic wand. It also retains manual steaming. That can be particularly useful when more than one person uses the machine or you make several milk drinks in a row. It will still require a clean wand, milk jug and attention to the drip tray.
The stated three-second ThermoJet warm-up describes the heating system. It does not include grinding, tamping, milk preparation or cleanup. If the convenience you want includes grinding and dosing, compare a bean-to-cup machine rather than assuming the Plus automates the full drink.
Reasons to consider it
- Automatic milk texturing lowers the learning curve for milk drinks.
- Manual steam remains available as skills improve.
- Compact body leaves room for a separate grinder.
- Single- and dual-wall baskets give flexibility while learning.
Reasons to pause
- No integrated grinder; the full setup costs more than the machine price.
- You still prepare and tamp the coffee yourself.
- The automatic milk feature may be unnecessary if you mostly drink straight espresso.
- Manufacturer specifications cannot tell us how it will feel or perform in your kitchen.
The workflow in practice
Grind fresh beans with a suitable espresso grinder, fill and tamp the portafilter, lock it in and select a shot. For milk, place the jug under the wand and choose a temperature and texture, or steam manually. Clean the wand and empty the drip tray as needed. The Plus simplifies one step; it does not automate grinding, dosing or cleanup.
Think in complete setup prices
| Decision | Bambino Plus | Standard Bambino |
|---|---|---|
| Milk routine | Automatic texture and temperature settings, or manual. | Manual steaming. |
| Coffee preparation | Grind, dose and tamp yourself. | Grind, dose and tamp yourself. |
| Separate grinder | Needed for fresh beans. | Needed for fresh beans. |
| Best reason to choose | Regular milk drinks with assistance. | Manual milk or mostly straight espresso. |
Both require a grinder for fresh beans. Add a scale, beans, cleaning supplies and any accessories not in your exact box before deciding whether the milk feature earns its premium. UK and US prices are separate market snapshots, and promotional prices may end.

Who should buy the Bambino Plus?
Choose it if milk drinks are a priority and you are comfortable learning the coffee-preparation steps. If you mainly drink espresso, the standard Bambino’s manual wand may be enough; read our Bambino review and the side-by-side comparison. If you want beans in and a finished drink out with minimal involvement, look at a different machine category.

Frequently asked questions
Does it grind coffee?
No. A separate grinder is needed for fresh whole beans. The listed dual-wall baskets provide a more forgiving starting point with pre-ground coffee, but they do not replace a grinder if you want to dial in fresh coffee.
Can I steam milk myself?
Yes. Sage lists both automatic texturing and a manual steaming option.
Is the machine price the full setup cost?
No. The UK figure is Sage’s online list price; the US figure is Breville’s promotional price, with the regular price shown above. Both were checked on 29 September 2026. Include a suitable grinder, coffee, water care and ongoing cleaning supplies in your budget. Check the specific finish and retailer for the price you will actually pay.
