How Much Does a Home Espresso Setup Cost in the UK?

Updated 28 September 2026. A home espresso setup costs more than the machine on its box. This UK guide works through the grinder, beans and upkeep, with a real price example and a reusable budget formula. Prices are a snapshot, not a price promise.
The quick answer
For a separate manual machine and grinder, the Sage Bambino (£329.95) plus Dose Control Pro (£169.95) total £499.90 before coffee and any extras at the manufacturers’ listed UK prices on 28 September 2026. Both are examples for arithmetic, not tested recommendations. A bean-to-cup machine has a built-in grinder, so do not add a second one by default.
Where does the grinder fit?
Two routes to fresh-ground espresso. The beans and ongoing care belong in both budgets.
| Cost | Manual machine + grinder example | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Espresso machine | £329.95 | What is included in the box? |
| Espresso-capable grinder | £169.95 | Can it grind fine and adjust for espresso? |
| Equipment subtotal | £499.90 | Add delivery if applicable. |
| First beans | Variable | Choose the pack size you will use while fresh. |
| Water, cleaning and optional tools | Variable | Check the machine’s included accessories first. |
Where the money goes
1. Machine and grinder
A manual machine needs suitably ground coffee. If it has no built-in grinder, budget for an espresso-capable burr grinder or accept the limits of pre-ground coffee. Sage lists single and dual wall baskets, a milk jug, tamper, water filter and cleaning items with the Bambino, so those are not automatic day-one purchases. An all-in-one or bean-to-cup model changes this calculation; compare the full package rather than machine prices alone.
2. Beans per drink
Divide the bag price by the number of doses it yields. At an illustrative 18 g dose, a 1 kg bag makes about 55 doses before dial-in waste (1,000 ÷ 18 = 55.6). Union’s Revelation 1 kg bag was listed at £32.95 on the date above. That works out to roughly 60p of beans per 18 g dose (£32.95 ÷ 55.6), before wasted shots, milk, electricity and delivery. A smaller 200 g pack was listed at £7.95, about 72p per 18 g dose. Dose size, actual yield and bean prices vary.

3. Water and maintenance
Follow your machine’s manual for water hardness, filters, cleaning and descaling. The timing and cost depend on local water, usage and the specific machine. Keep a monthly allowance in your worksheet rather than assuming maintenance is free.
4. Extras
A scale, knock box or upgraded tamper can be useful, but check the included accessories and use the machine first. Leave optional tools out of the starting subtotal until you know what problem they solve for you.
Make your own 12-month budget
Build the total in three steps
| Line | Your figure | How to calculate |
|---|---|---|
| Machine | £_____ | Price paid, including delivery |
| Grinder (if separate) | £_____ | Zero if already built in or owned |
| Other necessary tools | £_____ | Only missing essentials |
| Beans per month × 12 | £_____ | Based on your cups and dose |
| Milk per month × 12 | £_____ | If you make milk drinks |
| Filters and cleaning for year one | £_____ | Use the manual and local water needs |
| First-year total | £_____ | Add the rows above |
For example, two 18 g drinks a day use about 1.08 kg of beans in a 30-day month before waste. At £32.95 per kg that is about £35.59 monthly, or £427.03 for 12 months at that unchanged unit price. That is a usage illustration, not a prediction of your actual spending. A more forgiving plan adds a little for practice shots and price changes.
To avoid paying for the wrong equipment, first choose the workflow in our machine buying guide, then use the grinder checklist. Our maintenance guide explains the water and cleaning lines in the worksheet.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a grinder with a manual espresso machine?
For fresh whole beans, yes, unless the machine has a suitable grinder built in. Pre-ground coffee can work with a compatible pressurised basket, but it gives less control over the grind. Check the machine’s supplied baskets.
Is a bean-to-cup machine cheaper?
It can cost less or more as a complete initial setup. Its grinder is normally integrated, which removes the separate-grinder line. Compare your chosen machine’s current total and maintenance costs.
What should I buy on day one?
Start with the machine, a compatible way to grind or obtain coffee, beans and whatever is genuinely missing from the box. Check included baskets, tamper, jug and cleaning supplies before ordering duplicates.
How often should I update this budget?
Recheck prices and availability immediately before purchase. We will refresh the examples periodically; retailer promotions, pack sizes and shipping can change the total.
