How to Clean and Maintain an Espresso Machine

Coffee oils, milk residue and mineral scale need different cleaning steps. Use this checklist to understand the jobs, then follow your machine’s manual for products, parts and intervals.

Three residues, three jobs

Use the manual for products, intervals and whether your model supports each cycle.

After brewingCoffee oils and groundsRinse basket and portafilter; clean the brew path only as directed.
After milk useMilk residueWipe and purge the wand or run the milk-system rinse.
As promptedMineral scaleSet water hardness and follow the approved descaling process.
Backflushing and descaling solve different problems. Some machines cannot be backflushed.

Separate daily cleaning from descaling

Coffee residue: Rinse the basket and portafilter after brewing and clear the drip tray. Backflush or run a cleaning cycle only if the manual permits it.

Milk residue: Wipe and purge a steam wand after use. Follow the separate rinse and deeper-clean instructions for an automatic milk system.

Mineral scale: Set water hardness and descale when the machine or manual calls for it, using the approved solution. A coffee-oil cleaner does a different job.

A realistic after-drink routine

Knock out the coffee puck, rinse or wipe the basket and portafilter, and leave parts to dry as the manual directs. If you used the steam wand, wipe and purge it promptly. If you have a milk carafe, run its specified quick clean and refrigerate or empty milk according to its instructions. Empty the drip tray and used-puck container before they become full.

At the end of a brewing session, check whether your machine calls for a clear-water flush or backflush. A Sage tutorial describes a clear-water backflush after each session for a supported Barista Express model, but that is model-specific. An appliance with a different group or automatic brew unit may have entirely different steps.

Water hardness and filters

Use the supplied test strip or your water supplier’s information to set water hardness if the machine supports it. A filter can affect taste and scale management, but it does not make the appliance maintenance-free. Replace it at the interval in the manual and keep the tank clean. Some models prompt for descaling based on the hardness setting and use; do not ignore an alert simply because you use filtered water.

Before buying, ask how you will access the tank under cupboards and whether replacement filters and approved descaler are readily available in your country. These running costs belong in the first-year setup budget. Avoid giving every machine one universal descaling calendar.

How to plan the deeper jobs

Keep a small maintenance record with the date, the task and the product used. The machine’s own indicators and manual take priority over a fixed internet schedule. Confirm whether the brew unit is removable, which parts are dishwasher-safe, whether a backflush is permitted, and whether the descaling procedure requires removing a water filter first.

The grinder also needs care. Unplug before opening it as instructed, clear loose grounds with the supplied brush or approved method, and avoid water on electrical parts or burrs unless the manual explicitly allows it. If the grind changes suddenly or the machine leaks, consult troubleshooting guidance rather than repeatedly running harsh cleaning cycles.

Questions to ask before choosing a machine
QuestionWhy it matters
How is the milk system cleaned?After-use work can outweigh one-touch convenience.
Can I reach the tank and tray?Daily access affects counter placement.
What water test or filter is supplied?Hardness changes the care plan and cost.
Is the brew unit removable?Cleaning methods vary by design.
Are consumables and service available?Ownership continues after the warranty begins.

For a broader workflow decision, use our machine buying guide. If you make many milk drinks, pay special attention to the actual rinse and disassembly steps in each product manual rather than the number of preset drinks advertised.

Frequently asked questions

Is backflushing the same as descaling?

No. Backflushing on a compatible machine cleans coffee residue in the brew path; descaling targets mineral deposits in the water path. Some machines do not support backflushing. Use only the cycle and products specified for your model.

Can I use vinegar to descale?

Follow the machine manual and use a permitted product. Do not assume a household acid or cleaner is suitable for seals, sensors and the internal water path.

How often should I clean a steam wand?

Wipe and purge it after each milk use as directed by the manufacturer. Check the manual for any deeper cleaning if a tip becomes blocked.

Does filtered water mean I never need to descale?

No. Filter performance, water hardness and machine design differ. Set the hardness correctly, replace filters when instructed and follow the appliance’s alerts and manual.
